A COMEDY
ABOUT TRAGEDY
Inspired by the director’s real experience of loss, DEAN is about a struggling illustrator named Dean (Demetri Martin) and his father (Kevin Kline) who are both struggling with the loss of their mother/wife in their own ways.
When Josh came on board the project, he worked with Demetri to punch up the comedy and story. But through that collaboration, they gave the movie a new structure, unique style, and wrote and filmed brand new memorable scenes.
THEATRICAL FEATURE
CBC FILMS’ DEAN
Demetri Martin • kevin kline • GILLIAN JACOBS
We’ve had tons of memorable Hollywood moments, but Robert De Niro awarding DEAN the award for Tribeca Film Festival’s Best Feature is one of the highlights. Before Josh edited WELCOME TO ME (National Board of Review Winner) or Netflix’s IBIZA or Fox’s WELCOME TO FLATCH, he co-produced and edited Demetri Martin’s (Taking Woodstock, Another World) feature debut. Read on to see how he helped shape (and re-shape) this film.
comedy. with style.
let’s get animated
In addition to filming inserts of live-action drawings, Josh created animation sequences for the film from Demetri’s original drawings. What started out as a stylistic flourish evolved into a fresh joke and storytelling device, culminating with a two-minute illustration sequence that delivers the movie’s emotional punch.
Don’t miss the
honeybus
Demetri had the genius idea to use the music of the 1960s Brit rock band Honeybus throughout the film, a la the use of Cat Stevens in Harold & Maude or Simon & Garfunkel in The Graduate. Josh ran with that idea, helping craft the film’s distinct tone.
